What Is “Solar Eclipse Energy” Anyway?
You’ve probably heard something about the new moon on Thursday, June 10 (2021) and how it’s a powerful solar eclipse and perhaps a whole bunch of technical mumbo jumbo about it being a partial annular eclipse…and wondering what this means for you.
This is actually the perfect thing to ask because this new moon/solar eclipse is happening in the sign of thoughtful, curious Gemini—and Gemini’s ruling planet, Mercury, is right there next to the convergence of the Sun and the Moon.
But whoa, let’s back up a bit.
Every month, as the moon goes through its phases, we get one full moon and one new moon. Full moons—when Luna is 180º opposite to the Sun—are considered to represent completion of certain tasks, initiatives and even relationships whereas new moons, which occur in the same sign the Sun is in, represent beginnings.
And then twice a year, when those full and new moons are in proximity of the moon’s nodes, we get eclipses: either when the Moon is full and the Earth blocks the Sun’s light from reaching the moon (lunar eclipse) or during a new Moon, when she moves in between the Earth and Sun in a straight line, obscuring our view of the Sun (solar eclipse), forcing us to focus on the NOW.
Eclipses occur in pairs (with super-rare incidences of a third in a cycle)—one new moon/solar and one full moon/lunar. To astrologers, these are powerful portals that set up six-month vibrational frequencies that we can tap into and “surf” to create, fulfill, release or hit reset in significant areas of our lives.
Full moon/lunar eclipses are believed to illuminate things or aspects of situations that have been hidden (or “eclipsed”) from our conscious view while new moon/solar eclipses are understood to be ideal times for new undertakings because whatever is begun under this energy is highly auspicious.
This eclipse is, as mentioned above, a partial annular solar eclipse. Because of where the Moon is in its orbit around the Earth, it’s too far to entirely blot out the Sun (“partial”) so it will leave a fiery red ring around the outer rim of the Sun, technically called an annulus of light that surrounds it mid-eclipse. (That's the photo that accompanies this blog post; photo credit Abel Pardo Lopez.)
Hence the moniker “ring of fire.”
Gemini, a mutable air sign, is about communication, ideas, people and information. Gemini is an info junkie, ceaselessly hoovering up data and opinions and even gossip as it does its whirling dervish dance through life. You can love Gemini, get overwhelmed by its nonstop energy, be in awe of it—or be one yourself—but bottom line, you will never be bored by it!
Gemini is chatty, but it’s not (generally) a monologist. Gemini thrives on the exchange of thoughts and ideas: “Hey, here’s my POV; what do you think about that?!”
As a nimble air sign, they often pick up on things that haven’t yet reached the masses or mainstream. They love being the one to break the news—any news.
And while for some, this can be tiresome, for those with an affinity for this clever, funny, snappy, inventive, high-voltage energy, it’s the ultimate in infotainment.
If there’s one fly in the ointment, it’s that it can be hard to get “pure” Gemini energy to settle down long enough to tune into its feelings. Even if it can tune in, it tends to tune out, or just move on to the next thing, in pretty short order.
This new moon/solar eclipse right next to Mercury (one degree apart at 19-20º Gemini) doubles the fun—or let’s say intensifies the quicksilver mental energy. Where does this land in your chart? That house area is sure to be activated today, over the next two weeks and even until the corresponding full moon in Gemini, on December 18.
Do you have an idea that involves communication, social media, networking, writing, broadcasting, gathering people together or transmitting ideas in some very new way? Perfect!
Or maybe you’re just craving more communication in a certain relationship? Grab the reins, turn on the microphone and start talking. Be mindful of your audience, though, and remember to come up for air, and hand someone else the talking stick. Keep an open mind because even if you think you know what they’re going to say, in truth, you don’t.
Since this is a new moon… if you keep a journal of your new moon wishes, start a new page. The lunation occurs at 6:53am ET, so you’ve got 8 hours—until 2:53pm ET—to jot ‘em down. And remember as you’re doing this to give gratitude as if all this is already manifest. Because in 5-D quantum reality, it is.
