Chaos or Creation?
There’s some seriously big-deal stuff going on in the sky—TODAY!—and it harks back to earlier in 2020, which will go down in history as no one’s favorite year. While we can’t “predict” how things will play out, there are certain patterns we can look back to, both globally (ie, mundane astrology) and in your own life.
The first of the next biggies, let’s call them, comes this afternoon (EST), when Jupiter aligns exactly with Pluto for the third and, mercifully, final time this year. Their previous meetups were on April 5 and June 30, so whip out your calendar and see what themes were playing out around then.
Jupiter is actually one of the planetary good guys. We call him the “great benefic” because he brings luck, expansion, optimism, hope, wealth, freedom, honesty and integrity to whatever he gets involved in.
Pluto, lord of the underworld, is more mysterious and nefarious, governing all things hidden and secretive, esoteric and metaphysical. He rules destruction, chaos, death, rebirth and transformation, plagues and viruses, and he just plain intensifies everything he touches.
Yeah, ouch.
When these heavyweights conjunct, once again in Capricorn (think government, structures, patriarchy, tradition, foundations, institutions, property, time), we once again find ourselves at a critical crossroads. Do we—does life—crumble under the pressure of Pluto’s devastating force, or can we lean in to all the positivity and hopefulness Jupiter promises?
Look at your own chart, to where 22-23º Capricorn lands. The areas of life associated with that house have probably been shaken, rattled and rolled since last January. And if you have other planets, major house cusps or points at 22-23º Aries, Cancer or Libra, they’ve probably been put through the metamorphic ringer, too.
It’s easy to focus on the pain of these cycles and what’s been lost—and please don’t think I’m insensitive to the very real horror many people have been through during this global crisis. What’s happening is real. But as we learn on our spiritual journeys, out of loss/pain/suffering comes evolution and transcendence. After the dark night of the soul comes the golden glowing light of awareness.
We all chose to be here now (to coin a phrase), for different reasons. Some have already experienced healing, liberation and quantum growth. Others are in the midst of it, and others still are resisting letting go of the old and embracing the unknown—or simply allowing it to come. This Jupiter-Pluto union can help us get unstuck, much like a good stick of dynamite can.
Later this month, Jupiter will leave Pluto in the dust and catch back up with Saturn, the keeper of time and tradition, in Capricorn for the last time for the next three decades. Then, together, they will forge ahead into idealistic, humanitarian, radical, liberated, reforming Aquarius.
We can leave the old behind and bravely step into the new. But to do that, we have to shed old skin and old ways—the painful part. Aquarius’ promise is big and bold and intoxicating. This today’s Jupiter-Pluto can help us prepare, well, to the extent anyone can prepare for what’s next.
After all that, Mars ending its two-month retrograde tomorrow and blasting full steam ahead in Aries doesn’t sound like much, but that forward-looking energy is key. Do you remember what happened to Lot’s wife (in the Biblical book of Genesis), who was told not to look back as Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed? Pillar of salt ring a bell!
The lesson: Clinging to the past doesn’t get us anywhere. As stolid Capricorn energy gives way to revolutionary Aquarian ideals, we can start to dream a more transcendental world into being. But there will be “collateral damage.”
And on that cheery note… This is happening, and there aren’t enough fingers to plug the holes in the dyke. But if we can gaze past the momentary chaos and keep ascending, we will see that the view from the summit is beyond exquisite.
